BACKGROUND OF DOROTEIA PATHWAYS FDN.

Doroteia Pathways Foundation was initially created to enable a few young people in St. Margaret's Village in Belize to attend high school.  Many children in Belize, especially in the smaller villages, have to give up their studies after elementary school because they cannot afford the cost of school fees, uniforms, books, computer labs, and bus fare required for them to be able to attend secondary school.  In this Spanish speaking region of Belize, most of the families are well aware of the value of education, but they simply to not have the financial means to pursue it.  High school opens the doors of opportunity and changes the lives of the children who are able to attend.

The Doroteia Belize Scholarship Fund started in 2005 with the modest intention of raising sufficient funds just to enable the top two students from St. Margaret's Village elementary school to attend high school.  Since then, the project has not stopped growing.  Those first two students successfully graduated from high school in 2009, two more graduated in 2010, and three graduated in 2011.  Some of our students now have gone on to college.  Because of the generous support of contributors in Chico, and other places, Doroteia is currently providing educational assistance to 12 high school students and 5 college students in Belize.

In addition to our work in education, Doroteia has collaborated with Project SAVE of Chico, California, to send two 20 foot cargo containters of medical equipment and supplies to clinics and hospitals in Belize and Guatemala, and a 40 foot cargo container to Haiti.  The Haiti shipment also included, besides general humanitarian aid and medical supplies, 85 donated bicycles, as well as wheelchairs and tools.  Two Chico bicycle mechanics and one carpenter went to Haiti at the same time to set up a bike shop and train bicycle mechanics in conjunction with our friends at Neges Foundation, based in Léogâne, Haiti.  We helped with needed construction work at an orphanage as well.

Many clinics and hospitals in Central America have very little equipment, and our shipments have made a world of difference there.  We have enabled the community of Benque, in Belize, to create a much needed clinic where there had been none, and Belmopan Hospital was able to open up another operating room with the equipment we brought in.

Doroteia also works with Mira Talbott-Pope, a Chicoan now living in Guatemala, to provide food baskets, art classes, and other enrichment activities to needy children in her area of Guatemala.  If you are interested in sponsoring a child to art school for one year, contact Mira by email at every14peace@yahoo.com.  You can read more about this program on our Guatemala Art Project page.
